About Us
We are a community of makers, dreamers and scientists at the cutting edge of biology, united under one mission: to “write” DNA and empower biotech to build a better world. Founded in South San Francisco in 2013 by Dr Emily Leproust along with Bill Banyai and Bill Peck, our journey began with a bold idea – use a silicon-chip manufacturing platform to scale DNA synthesis like never before. We make DNA, not as a tagline but as a mission. Our proprietary platform miniaturises reaction volumes by a factor of a million and synthesises thousands of genes on a single chip — unlocking breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture, data storage and industrial biology.
Today, our products power research in everything from antibody discovery to next-generation sequencing, from engineered crops to sustainable materials. We’re growing fast, culturally vibrant and inclusive: the people of Twist come from diverse backgrounds and bring bold ideas every day. We believe that scaling biology is one of the grandest engineering challenges of our generation — whether rewriting life for health or using DNA to archive data for centuries.
